@sunlaire I am so sorry to get back to you so late - Was quite busy today but wanted to see if I could help you on your last point regarding the furnace for the heating system and this was too much for a comment so...

In HMS Terror it is stated a heating system was placed in Terror's orlop during Terror's retrofitting stage (1835) while they were preparing her for polar voyages,

'...A novel addition was a hot water heating system fueled by a massive furnace in the orlop deck...'

From what I can understand, this design changed:

'In 1839 this [Perkins forced hot water furnace] was replaced with a Sylvester's patent furnace...'

It is stated that the original heating system used on Terror in 1836/7 for Back's expedition 'operated so poorly once in the Arctic that Back had it dismantled.'

As for the Sylvester furnace mentioned prior and its stated position:

'The system was placed in the hold on a platform with a copper plating...'

On the updated deck plans the Sylvester furnace is noted as being placed in the hold in the Terror's hold plans, among the water tanks and ballast, essentially midship. Its rather confusing because the horizontal view of Terror's plans shows the furnace extending up into the orlop in the same position (on the orlop deck this part is 'open to beams') so I suppose you can make a case that this furnace was situated in the orlop and in the hold simultaneously and was big enough to extend (vertically) into the orlop deck. This is at least what I can deduce from squinting at the updated deck plans :D

A quick fact as well is that this heating system 'presumably' heated up just the officers cabins and the Captain's cabin. The heating for the crew accommodation spaces (such as the forecastle) were done with the galley stove.

So i drew some fanart of @pompadorbz sorry boys "still wakes the deep" au ! I had fun with the more action filled drawings, and definetly wanna do more >:P

While drawing, i got to brainstorming about what character roles the boys might take in the story. Like, charlies probably caz, and maybe phil is caz's friend whos a cook (i forgot his name) but then i thought about if characters like Rennick had a coresponding cc, and i immediately thought about schlatt. So, i have ideas about what expanding the au might look like, but this isnt MY au, so for now ill hold off on yapping my ideas and just share what ive drawn for now

But either way, i REALLY enjoy this au and love all the ansgt potential it has. Like i was thinking, who out of the boys would end up being the last one? (Aka, taking caz's place at the end of the story with the lighter) and thought that, out of the boys, it would just make the most sense to be tommy. And thats HORRIBLE, AUGH ITS SO SAD but i LOVE IT

Honestly I feel for Sam but serves him right.

Even if we ignore the potential intermingling of the web or any other other spooky strings that are likely being pulled, there's a lot to unpack here.

I wouldn't say Sam "deserved" it, but Alice tried warning him for months. This is what he gets for sticking his nose in places it didn't belong.

Did I say the same thing about Jon in TMA? Yes and no. Obviously there isn't a story without someone doing something dumb, but I think Jon's situation and Sam's situation are a little different. Jon was an idiot, yes, but he (and everyone else around him) were forced to go in completely blind. He had no idea what he was doing and didn't have any warnings or help at all except from his creepy boss with ulterior motives.

Sam also went in blind, but he was warned several times by several people including the eldritch computer to stop and turn around. He could have avoided this if he just returned Alice's calls or looked at her messages.

But nooooo he had to poke around with his little crushy crush and get himself thrown into a portal to what we can only assume is the TMA universe. Serves him right.

Two years ago today, after a decade or so of really struggling and without any understanding of why I found things so difficult, I was finally diagnosed as being autistic and then, as if me being so needed any further confirmation... one year ago today, a few months after I had first read the book, I watched Pride and Prejudice (2005) with my friend and a brand new special interest was discovered. Watching an adaptation sparked a desire for a re-read to re-acquaint myself with the characters and the story. So, I went away and did precisely that... and I was so captivated that I ended up reading Pride and Prejudice four times in ten days... which is why I am *gestures vaguely to my entire blog* the way that I am now.

I think it's an amusing coincidence that both events happened to occur on the same date a year apart! That year between being diagnosed and (re?)discovering the masterpiece that is Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice was quite painful and often lonely, but in the year since I've reconnected with books and my love of reading that had been largely absent since childhood.

After Pride and Prejudice, I of course read the other five novels, which between them have just as many hilarious, dramatic and romantic moments and fell entirely in love with Jane Austen's incredibly witty writing. Then I branched out to reading more classics and discovered other authors I adore too, such as the Brontë sisters and Elizabeth Gaskell, all of whom are incredible authors in their own right with their respective distinctive styles. So different from Austen yet equally as enjoyable!

Thanks to my love for Pride and Prejudice, I've also reconnected with my longstanding love of history that had been almost entirely extinguished after I finished my degree. I've delved into the Georgian era in far greater depth than ever before and discovered what an interesting and pivotal period it was. I still have so much to learn but it's been thoroughly enjoyable.

I've fallen in love with learning and reading again. It's been a really beautiful process and was exactly what I needed after a tough time. I owe so much to Pride and Prejudice for sparking that drive and passion for literature within a burnt-out bookworm, and it's lovely to share that passion here on this blog with others that get it, too! :)
